Shadow
The theme of CRAFT 2019 is “SHADOW.” This theme refers to traditional art forms that are closely connected to Indonesian society, particularly on the island of Java.
A shadow is a two-dimensional reflection of an object—unique in its form. In Javanese society, in particular, the potential of shadows has long been harnessed as a storytelling tool, passed down through generations in the form of Wayang (shadow puppetry).
As a world heritage, the narrative values within Wayang have grown alongside society, accompanied by its distinctive ‘shadow art.’ This art form laid the foundation for the development of modern cinema. It has continued to thrive, inspiring the modern world and evolving into digital forms such as animated films.
