Through diverse styles and perspectives, these Thai independent animators make sense of the bitter, complicated, and sometimes absurd realities around them. This year - 2026 - is the 100th anniversary of Lotte Reinger’s animated feature film The Adventures of Prince Achmed. It is the world’s first animated feature that was inspired by Chinese animation. Over the years, many animators have been similarly inspired and have created various versions and styles to express themselves using silhouette animation. This programme of shorts is a homage to the imagination and skill of Lotte Reiniger, proving that the shadow play artform is still relevant to today’s times, and is also able to cross centuries and boundaries. These six shorts come from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia with stories that have been deeply embedded in their various communities traditions and civilisation. Like shadow play and its stories over the centuries, they invariably carry moral messages about how men should live their lives.

Tahun 2026 ini, menandai peringatan 100 tahun film animasi panjang karya Lotte Reiniger, *The Adventures of Prince Achmed*. Film ini merupakan film animasi panjang pertama di dunia yang terinspirasi oleh animasi Tiongkok. Selama bertahun-tahun, banyak animator yang turut terinspirasi dan menciptakan berbagai versi serta gaya untuk mengekspresikan diri melalui animasi siluet. Program film pendek ini merupakan bentuk penghormatan terhadap imajinasi dan keterampilan Lotte Reiniger, sekaligus membuktikan bahwa seni pertunjukan bayangan masih relevan di masa kini serta mampu melintasi batasan zaman dan wilayah. Keenam film pendek ini berasal dari Malaysia, Singapura, dan Indonesia, dengan kisah-kisah yang mengakar kuat dalam tradisi serta peradaban masyarakat setempat. This short weaves two intertwining stories through the ancient art of Malay shadow play. In the first, a workaholic father grows increasingly impatient with his young son as they journey to a puppet show. In the second, a man who dotes on his son secretly brutalises his wife. He then vanishes after a violent incident. At the heart of both narratives stands the dalang, a shadow puppet master whose performance becomes an act of catharsis and self-healing for his wife. She finally finds the courage to reveal the truth to her estranged son. The film poses a question: whether we have the courage to confront what is hidden in plain sight, and break the cycle before it claims the next generation. Film pendek ini merangkai dua kisah yang saling terkait melalui seni kuno pertunjukan wayang kulit Melayu. Kisah pertama menampilkan seorang ayah yang gila kerja dan semakin kehilangan kesabaran terhadap putranya yang masih kecil saat mereka dalam perjalanan menuju sebuah pertunjukan wayang. Kisah kedua menceritakan seorang pria yang sangat menyayangi putranya namun diam-diam melakukan kekerasan kejam terhadap istrinya; ia kemudian menghilang setelah sebuah insiden kekerasan terjadi. Di pusat kedua kisah ini hadir sosok dalang, yang pertunjukannya menjadi sarana katarsis dan penyembuhan diri bagi sang istri. Sang istri akhirnya menemukan keberanian untuk mengungkapkan kebenaran kepada putranya yang telah lama berjarak dengannya. Film ini melontarkan sebuah pertanyaan: apakah kita memiliki keberanian untuk menghadapi hal yang tersembunyi di depan mata, serta memutus siklus tersebut sebelum ia menjerat generasi berikutnya?

This short is a final year project by an animation student studying in Poland. Based on a Malay legend, it tells of a clever young boy, Hang Nadim, who saves a fishing village from being attacked by leaping swordfish. Unfortunately, being in a feudal society, his cleverness is seen as a threat to the elite. The character designs are inspired from shadow play characters, with the backgrounds based on batik designs and music from gamelan. The narration is in Polish with visuals that communicate effectively. Film pendek ini merupakan proyek tugas akhir seorang mahasiswa animasi yang menempuh studi di Polandia. Diangkat dari sebuah legenda Melayu, film ini mengisahkan tentang seorang anak laki-laki cerdas bernama Hang Nadim yang menyelamatkan sebuah desa nelayan dari serangan ikan todak yang melompat ke daratan. Sayangnya, karena hidup dalam masyarakat feodal, kecerdasannya justru dianggap sebagai ancaman bagi kaum elite. Desain karakternya terinspirasi dari tokoh-tokoh pertunjukan wayang kulit, dengan latar belakang yang mengacu pada motif batik serta iringan musik gamelan. Narasi film disampaikan dalam bahasa Polandia, namun didukung oleh visual yang mampu menyampaikan pesan secara efektif.

This short is a final year project by a lecturer in animation for her Masters programme in Australia. In its design element, it celebrates the shadow play art of Southeast Asia. This experimental project combines a story from the traditional Ulek Mayang song which originates from the East Coast state of Terengganu in Malaysia. Batik motifs from Malaysia and Indonesia, and Javanese puppet characters are used to tell the story of the hero who gets sidetracked on his journey but ultimately rediscovers the objective of his quest. Film pendek ini merupakan proyek tugas akhir seorang dosen animasi untuk program gelar Master-nya di Australia. Dari segi desain, karya ini mengangkat seni pertunjukan bayangan (shadow play) khas Asia Tenggara. Proyek eksperimental ini memadukan kisah yang bersumber dari lagu tradisional *Ulek Mayang*—yang berasal dari negara bagian Terengganu di pesisir timur Malaysia—dengan penggunaan motif batik dari Malaysia dan Indonesia serta karakter wayang Jawa untuk menceritakan perjalanan seorang pahlawan yang sempat kehilangan arah namun pada akhirnya berhasil menemukan kembali tujuan pencariannya.
