OF SHADOWS & THE SHADOWY: WAYANG, ANIMATION & CINEMA | by Hassan Abd Muthalib (Malaysia)

Wayang is acknowledged as the earliest form of cinema due to the cinematic apparatus being clearly present in its performance. With its articulating limbs & mouth movements, wayang is also the earliest example of cut out animation. The use of shadows in its storytelling has moved into animation & cinema in various ways to function as indexes of characters who are ambiguous, shady or downright evil. This use can be seen in German Expressionism, gangster movies & film noir, to name but a few genres.

RISING OF THE ANIMADOC: ANIMATED DOCUMENTARIES – IS IT POSSIBLE? by Piotr Kardas (Poland)

The history of the animated documentary (animadoc) started 100 years ago, along with the premiere of Winsor McCay’s propaganda movie "The Sinking of the Lusitania" (1918). Since that time, in every decade we have examples of the combination of the seemingly contradictive terms: animation and documentary. In recent years, animadoc has become very popular, inspiring and fascinating, but for some is still controversial.

What is it "animadoc"? Is it possible at all to tell "the documentary truth" through animation? Discover the answers of those questions, based on examples and during festival.
